Thank you Howard, I will…
Thank you Howard,
I will double check before it goes off but I am pretty sure its dead. The leads are brand new and have new carbons in the pickups. I removed the small screw on the top and put a fresh carbon in there too and it chewed it up after spinning the mag.
This bike has sat for over 50 years so I don't mind throwing a bit of attention its way as I am sure it wil pay me back in smiles per miles.

Before you put it back
If you haven't already, use a BSA extended nut for the bottom mag stud part no 67-1259. This saves an awful lot of faffling.
Rutland Dynamos and Magnetos (Peter de Kramer) does an excellent job with a long guarantee at a reasonable price.

Afternoon Gordon,
Yes this is something I will be looking into. There was much cursing and throwing of items in the garage on Sunday.

Craig, if you consider…
Craig, if you consider alternatives to repairing your mag such as going electronic I have a solution that's worked faultlessly for the last 4 years. It's a bit like talking religion or politics........... mag/ electronics so I do understand if you want mag only. If your open to an alternative happy to share my experience on 2 or 3 different bikes that I've converted. Best of luck with your repair.

Hi William, I am not anti a modern solution but I do like things to look standard if you see what I mean.
I am all ears

You can convert mag to…
You can convert mag to incorporate the electronics via a Thor Spark unit and visually all looks original at less than 1/2 the cost of a mag rewind. Pros and cons to both methods, I have had great luck with the Thor Spark unit on 3 different bikes

+1 for Rutland Dynamo
Peter de Kremer is extremely nice and helpful.
A rewind may be necessary, but I would have thought remagnetisation was the more likely need (and a new condenser).

Four rebuilds by Pete….
Every one beautifully presented and expertly rebuilt. Thoroughly recommend especially for those of us in the East Midlands. Located in Oakham, Peterdekramer@gmail.com

The problem with electronics
Functionally electronic ignition is excellent. The only achillies heel is that it is dependent on the charging system and battery.
I have in the past been let down by such delights as a failed rectifier but nonetheless the engine kept turning. Quite an advantage in the middle of nowhere.

Thank you Gentlemen, I will…
Thank you Gentlemen, I will look at all the options before I spend the money.
I do like the idea of originality and understanding the magneto system.
Since owning my uncles bike it has sparked (see what I did there)? my interest in pre war bikes and this is a great learning experience.

The above link is of a 1960 Triumph TR6C that I restored and is running on a Thor Spark ignition system that I added to the old magneto body. At the very end of the video you can see the mag, the bike appears to be a stock 1960 that was supplied the a magneto. This was a cold start by the way. Good luck on what ever you deside to do.

Magneto update.
I sent off my magneto to Peter de Kramer (see above) last Saturday. He received it on Tuesday. He phoned on Wednesday to say it was ready. It arrived yesterday (Thursday), complete with 5 year parts and labour guarantee.
Off to the workshop!

K2F front cover shims
There are 4 off - squarish, holes in 3 of the four corners. They are very thin and twist a lot after removal. Where can I buy replacements in the UK ???

Before you do that check the points are clean and there is a 12-15 thou gap., Remove the pickups and see that the brushes are springing and rough them gently with a very fine file. Have a look down the pickup holes and see that the brass commutator on the slip ring is clean. You can clean it with a cotton bud dipped in white spirit. Check the leads are unbroken and have a good contact into the plug holder and the pickup. Check the plugs are clean and around a 15 thou gap. Hold a plug against the mag body in your left hand and with the other hand flick the advance unit counter- clockwise as hard as you can with your fingers. Do you see a spark ? Or do you hear a crack of a spark ? If it really shows no life then consider further expensive specialist work. Paul at APL in Shaftesbury is excellent but it depends on where you live - there could be some other specialist near to your home. Good luck, howard
