Electronic Ignition Mix and Match

Forums

Hi,
My 69 750 Commando has Electronic Ignition fitted by a previous owner.

It's comprised of a Wassell Stator plate and Rotor but with a Boyer Bransden Mk3 Transistor box.
I am still working through some engine issues so no chance to test it thoroughly. It did start and run.

Would you foresee any issues? Can I assume the switching signal to the transistor box is the same from the Wassell unit as from a matching BB Rotor and Stator?

I have a new boxed complete Wassell EI but didn't want to use it unless I needed to.

Thx

Eddie Cross

Do not assume these two items will be compatible. IF they did start and work together, at some indeterminate revs there could be an instant change in the advance curve and your engine is on the other end of it! The Boyer Bransden parts are available separate if needed.

I'll probably swap in the Wassell transistor box unless I can find an odd rotor/stator plate for the Commando.

Eddie

It starts and runs- it’s very probably just fine.  It’s not easy to see what problems might occur.

It is worth checking the timing with a strobe, in case the previous person was careless in that respect.

The Wassell trigger assembly is more robust than Boyer’s offering.

... how a different exciter mechanism can alter the advance curve which is presumably built in to the Boyer black box?

The advance curve is not just built into the box, it is as much a design function of the two pickup parts as the amplifier box. So if you start mixing and matching items you do NOT fully understand then do not be surprised if the system causes you/your engine grief.

Will do Michael. Will take nothing for granted.

Marks on timing chain aligned.

Will back off to 28 degrees btdc from the scale on the drive side once the drive chain side is assembled with the alternator rotor.

Will then fit Wassell rotor to align with the the "A" mark on the stator plate centred between adjuster slots

Will then time again via a strobe once it has been started
