Now up to 500 miles on my 1964 Navigator since its rebuild and the bike is running very well and is a pleasure to ride, but I have a question when starting the bike from cold I have to flood the carb excessively (with the choke fully on) to get it to start with about 5 to 10 kicks, the spark plug colours are light chocolate brown, and when the engine is up to temp it restarts first kick. Any comments on the starting is it normal or is it me :-)

Starting Navigator

I've been out on my Navigator the last two evenings. Cold starts to the pub. Less cold engine but decidedly chilly back.
Agree with Robert.
No choke. Tickle for about - slow count to 5
Turn engine slowly to get kickstart in a good position. Hoof and it's usually off straight away. Small throttle opening.
Once flooded by using the choke too much you can hack away for ages. If you think it's flooded no choke and a wider throttle will usually get things lit up.

Made the tickover mixter a bit more rich and followed Peter's method of starting and it started 2nd kick from cold, I think I have spent to much time with my 1976 BMW, electric start and a bit more sophisticated carb has spoiled me rotten

I would experiment a little with your pilot settings and not open the throttle more than a fraction .Also check the fuel level may be a little low.
