To C3 or not to C3... That is the Question... :)

Forums

On the verge of buying new main bearings for a 650SS engine.
I have read a lot of info on the forum regarding the main bearings and have decided to go for the following:
Drive side FAG NJ306E
Timing side BL306 (11 balls)
Now, do I go for the Standard or C3 versions?
Over to you fine people to help me out on this one, please...

My thought would be, how tightly are the bearings gripped by the housings ? . I had to reduce the outer diameter of a box bearing to allow the bearing to spin freely . The old bearing that came out was in  just as tight. Its well known that the Factory had issues with old machinery. I could have ordered a larger clearance bearing of course. I think oversize bearings are possible to cope with slack housings. Should we be measuring the housings ?.

Hello Robert,
I believe the C3 bearings have a little more radial clearance to take up expansion on hot running engines /machinery.
Norton provided the later larger capacity machines with the so called "superblend" roller bearings for other issues. These seem to be available in both standard and C3 clearance.
