Filling forks

I just did this operation a couple of weeks ago. 
front wheel and mudguard off as I was reassembling the front end. 
unscrew the top nut completely off the damper rod. Extend the fork and dribble in some oil. Palm of the hand over the top of the fork and pump the slider up and down, add more oil, repeat until the oil is gone. It isn’t all that difficult, it’s not messy as it’s fresh oil. 

For me, fork top nuts off, fully extend the forks so as there is space to pour in the oil, pour oil in to top of fork and wait for it disappear (20 mins or so) pour more oil in and repeat until the required amount is in there.

As above - I’m with Bob on this method! Did this only a month ago.

That's a good tip Dougie, I would not have thought of that.

Even easier, bike centre stand on old piece of floor board, rock back so spring and damper rods go into stanchions, poor oil in using 170cc as per proddy racer instructions. Then use a piece of rubber roughly 3mm thick about 30mm x 30mm square and place over the stanchion and operate like a diaphragm pump. 

Using 170cc of oil prevents bottoming out of forms and improves the action. Not sure why this was never copied over to road models in 1971.

If you have the facilities (or can cadge...) a couple of old fork nuts bored through and with a length of tube welded on top make the job much easier...It doesn't make the job any faster but it does mean that the correct amount can be poured into each leg and then left to get on with it.

I use a large syringe with a fleible pipe. Undo top nuts and lower forks so that top of spring protrudes, insert syringe tube between coils just inside fort tube and slowly feed oil in so that it runs down the spring coils. I make myself comfortable on a stool before I start. I use a jack under the front of the bike.

Yes Richard's way of doing it is very suitable. I used it for time. But got tired even of that and bought some top nuts  with integrated part you only have to open to fill in without need of taking off the clocks etc.

It was offered time ago in Roadholder, but I will need to search in my invoices for supplier.
