Mikuni choke

On every choke that I have come across its push it down for choke on, lift it up for normal running.

Put an Amal on it!

British Carbs for British Bikes !!!!!!

If it's a proper lever push down for choke on , if it's a push pull type pull for choke on.

My sentiments entirely ,nothing wrong with an Amal MK 2

You push it down but they are either on or off, its very difficult to get an in between. Mikuni do a cable conversion for it which will give you a more accurate choke.

A SU carburettor would be better that do a conversion kit contact Amal& SU .co.uk

I'm using a VM36 mikuni on my 850, works fine now, but it was a cow to start before I sorted out a techique

The choke lever( its a starter system) is pushed down,this allows a metered amount of fuel into the starting system,You must have the throttle shut as this effects operation of the starter system

I'd advise you to download the Mikuni Vm Carburetor super tuning manual (from Allens performance or from Motocarb) pdf for free

My Technique is fuel on/ ignition off and check the clutch is nice and free,clutch out then push through two or three times with a little throttle basically to draw some fuel into the carb (if its been standing for a week or so) then choke(starter) lever on ignition on the bike normally starts first kick,as soon as it has I catch-it on the throttle and shut the choke off,I normally give the throttle stop screw half a turn in to keep the revs up until she settles to a steady but fast tick over,this can be altered by hand whilst on the move,You can start the bike in the normal way after a short stop for tea or a pie n mash,no choke, little throttle, big kick,good luck.

I agree with Steve. i have the same carb on a 72 750 and the knack is NO throttle on start up from cold.
