Hello wonderful helpful fellow Norton owners..
Reaching out for help and thoughts again please.. because I can't find this information in any reference books or pamphlets on the subject .
I am in the process of refitting forks into Yokes
( and Yes - I discovered that mismatched widths of top and bottom brackets are incompatible the hard way!) Its called a learning curve. they now match and are the slightly wider set.
But I have two questions:
1) as you can see from the photos, the top of the forks sit a few millimetres down in the top yokes. Is this normal or should they sit flush? If the latter than I can only assume that the chroming on the yokes has reduced the internal dimensions and I need to get them blasted and refinished, or machined .. thoughts and advices please?
2) how proud should the top threads be on the fork internals ? Currently I have 7 threads showing, on one and 4 on the other.. ( thanks to the previous builder.NOT!) so yes I appreciate they need to match up.. but how many threads showing would anyone advise please?
Thanks in advance for you giving up your time to help me.
Cheers,
Noriel Tim from Cheshire .
Extra Fittings
At one time you could get some large fibre washers to sit between the top of each stanchion and instrument plate (if one is fitted). These helped to seal the tops of the stanchions.
I have no idea what the part number was.

You might want to adjust the position of the nut on the damper rod to facilitate fitting the axle when the forks are at full extension ,axle holes should line up ! ,but usually dont . try putting the axle through to check .One leg is always longer and makes it hard to refit wheel and axle. May need some washers on the rod or even an extra washer under top nut?.

I think...
... the washer part number is T320 according to my Electra parts list - should be the same for all short roadholders. Although might be steel rather than fibre.

Washers
Ian.......T230 is the Chrome Washer that sits under the head of the Fork Nut. The washer I am referring to is exactly the same size but made of fibre. It sits between the clocks mounting plate (if fitted) and the top of the stanchion. It may have only been used on selected models such as the N15 & P11.

Tim - I would not fit those extra steel washers between the collar and the top nut as depicted in your image fork3.jpg. This restricts the damper movement somewhat and can cause the whole weight of the bike resting on the small nuts at the base of the two damper rods. This will occur riding over potholes and using the centre stand. There are no washers at this junction. Good luck, howard

... they're normally slightly recessed as you show. If the y were flush / proud the nuts wouldn't be able to tighten them into the taper.
As regards the damper threads, can't answer other than that they should be equal - assuming of course that fork internals are the same side to side. I seem to remember tightening them till there was no free play ie the clearance on top of the spring was taken up.
