While working on my royal enfield 350cc 1957 Bullet I wonder if anyone can give me some advice on refitting a Lucas SR1 magneto as what I have read is contradictory. The mag has been refurbished and is stamped to run anticlockwise. The points gap has been set at 0.012 as advised by one source (Lucas manual) but other manuals say 0.015. In terms of refitting there is a bolt only to pull on to the magneto shaft. Here the advice differs. I am told the correct method is to turn points side of magneto clockwise post points gap opening at 0..010-0,012 to close points gap to .002 so I can just pull feeler gauge (originally the famous Rizla paper) out then loosely put auto advance unit (with it secured at fully advanced pre-refitting by tying back the springs on the unit) onto the magneto shaft, hand push over retaining 'mound' and then tighten - stopping magneto shaft turning when doing so by a screw driver in the nut securing the cam on magneto shaft (wife being useful here) but not at any cost to disturb cam setting. Other advice says set points gap 0.15, put to auto adavnce to fully advanced and replace at the 0.15 gap. Other advice says try when points just begins to open before maximum 0.010 - 0.012 and leave auto advance at fully retarded with no need to pull open the springs. ..All this at 1/2 to 7/16 before TDC for the 350cc Bullet. I don't want to continue to take all apart every time in a process of trial and error in case of damaging some 60 year old threads etc so any help appreciated. Magnetos are new to me as the Dommie has a distributor. Hugh. . .. .
