No Most likely your shock…
No
Most likely your shock absorber rubbers are knackered.

Yes, that will be it. Cush…
Yes, that will be it. Cush drive rubbers are shot.
One thing that can cause that is an overtight rear brake causing the drum to overheat and cook the rubbers.

Thanks Peter and Tony. Cush…
Thanks Peter and Tony. Cush rubbers are cheap enough so I’ll replace them. Not removed the wheel before so rubbers could be 20 years old….

Replacing rear Cush Rubbers.
Get a tube of Red 'Rubber Grease' to help getting the 3 pins on the brake hub between the new rubbers. It's a fiddly job and requires a lot of strength to pull the wheel into place, it was on mine anyway. With the new rubbers and new tyres it has really improved the handling on my 750 Interstate.

Fixed!
I removed the rear wheel to find no ‘rubbers’ fitted on the overrun side of the drive pins and after fitting 3 new pairs all the backlash has gone, also an odd rumbling noise I’d noticed on the overrun has disappeared…I wonder why! Refitting the wheel into the rubbers was difficult….resorted to silicon grease and use of the axle spindle without Speedo drive fitted to pull the wheel into position. With this done and my breather problem resolved I’ve run out of things to do to the bike, perhaps I can just enjoy riding it now :-)
