model 88 deluxe bodywork and Dzus fittings

Forums

Hello all

I'm slowly reassembling a basket case Model 88 that has lain in the garage too long. I have pretty much everything, including all of the enclosing bodywork. I am slowly identifying parts as I go, but am trying to fit the bodywork and see how complete I am.

the frame has Dzus clips for the bodywork - but my box of fixings has just one long and one shorter Dzus "screw"

the parts manual and Andover parts list diagrams seem to entirely miss out the deluxe model completely.

I'm hoping someone may know where the long and short ones go, so I can get a set and assemble it all.

any help with which go where gratefully received

In the  1960's Norton parts list they list the dzus fasteners with the  manufacturers codes . From memory I think there are 2 lengths. The orriginal wire retaining circlips clips seem to be superceeded now by metal or plastic washers. Dzus fasteners were used by many other industries and you may also find them in Aircraft  spares lists.  I will look .

Hi Robert

I know the part numbers of the dzus screws from Norton (thanks Ashely at Andover) and all the wire clips are intact too. the retaining circlips are long gone (with the rest of the dzus screws)

what I just do not know and cant work out (the screws i have a fairly mangled where the engage with the wire) is what lengths go where

what i know so far is

22467  - Side panel DZUS Large – DZUS part number DZUS A6-60

22468 – Side panel DZUS small – DZUS part number DZUS A6-35

The Club had some tickler levers recently , terry type seat clips and rear no plates. I have a spare OS panel and front guard.

Each panel has 3 Dzus.    2 short and ! long .   The long one goes to the rear  and connects side panel to rear bathtub. the 2 short ones connect to the frame brackets.

Its a pleasure to help another DL owner , Not that many of us about. We must be a bit eccentric or weird . Does that sound familiar? !.

I have been chatting in email to Ashely over at Andover, who told me in his 9 years I'm the first person to ask about and try and get the fasteners from them!!!

I got my DL as a total basket case I think over 10 years ago and have been trying to get round to it ever since. too many other and interesting things and projects got in the way, but having sold half a dozen completed bikes over the last two years it finally made it to the bench.

I kept it in boxes in the warm and dry (internal garage to the house) and am assembling it to find out what is missing, and so far it is very much complete. I have all the bodywork and seat and badges. Oddly the spacers and bolts for the rear mudguard / bodywork are gone (I think it should be about a 30mm spacer) the engine turns over, brakes work, greabox appears fine, clutch lets me kick it over even!!!

I'm going to stop at the "mostly assembled" stage and do all the club and the DVLA paperwork shuffle to get a V5 for it. Then I can look at stripping and cleaning it and refurbing properly as I go. It seems inadertantly I have got something of a rarity - it is also matching numbers. But then again Polio is rare, and no one wants that, so perhaps rarity points to unpopular??

thanks for your help and advice, I may well be posting here with questions as I find all those things I don't know or have.

I buy all my Dzus fasteners from LAS Aerospace in Okehampton, Devon - https://www.lasaero.com/products/article/A00S661AF - this is the description page.  You should find all the dimensions on their site.  It's been quite a few years since I bough any but they were as cheap as chips.  (With the price of Cod going through the roof I expect they are a lot dearer now!)  You will have the advantage of anything you buy from them having aircraft certification - so you WILL be able to fly your Nortona again!  I also bought a reel of stainless steel wire to use as tying wire.  I offered it to NOC members in whatever lengths they needed, but got no takers!

Hi

I have bought the 35 and 60 length Dzus from them and they fit perfectly. and way cheaper than the one person I saw on ebay who wanted £15 or so per Dzus (and the picture looked amazingly like the LAS web picture!)

I bought a tin of stainless lock wire, probably 35 years ago (or even 40) with a centre feed hole (like solder) I've used it for everything from bikes, to holding things to paint, and a myriad of house bodges and fixes. It should be a staple in every shed

thanks for the LAS tip and confirmation

Strangely one of my Dzus fasteners fell off yesterday !, its been fine for the last 60 years. I have no idea why the DL  bikes were so unpopular, They do look much more balanced with a set of matching Craven panniers. The bike does everything a std dommy can do with the added advantage that you can conceal all maner of alterations and extra gismos under the panels.

Hi Robert

for the "short" ones (front and bottom fixing) I got A6-35 - they were from 2 x batches, one zinc plated and the other batch cad plated - but I'll just get them replated along with other stuff

for the "long" ones I got AJ6-60

the J means a longer undercut - ie the slimmed down part under the head

I've attached a picture (fingers crossed) of the ones I bought

they both fitted perfectly for me

I'm currently at the assembling and checking and trying to get the whole thing complete (it seems a lot of one step forward, one giant leap backwards at the moment) so I did not get any retainers for the moment. the bike won't be out of the garage for a long time - so not much chance of losing them, and there is still paint and such to come before I get to worrying about that

I'd likely go for a circlip when the day comes - but I cant remember a single Dzus I have had in the past having a retainer (bodged fairings and the like) in the past - i just tried to not drop them down drains when removing.

I know this is not the "purist" view, but there are bigger things to worry about on this one for the moment
