Kickstart return spring!
Good evening all, I'm hoping some light can be shed on an issue I currently have. I'm attempting to fit a new kickstart spring, the old one had snapped and appears to have a longer tang welded on.
It is the type of spring that slots in a hole, not the later hook type. I have tried the older spring, and the slightly thicker later one (pre-1962). For the life of me, I can't seem to get them to fit.
The older version will just about hold, but the tang keep hopping out and the spring cover will not fit over it. The later spring I'm struggling to get into the little hole at the base of the shaft.
Is there a trick to fitting them? Do I need to somehow tension the spring an extra turn so that it fits tighter in the shaft? I've taken a break as I can't take any more flat-head strikes to my hand.
The Motorcycle is an ES2 from 1954; I assume the gearbox is the original though I cannot be sure.

That's the spring that I've already bought. Ans the later version. Either of which fit. I fear that it has the incorrect bushing installed.

KS Bush
Adam, I think you are right to suspect the bush. The spring location slots should be fully visible, yours aren't. There are 2 versions of the bush: a longer one for the 102 variant of the laydown box which is what you should have, and a shorter one for the GB8 variant. Pics attached.

Its possible that the laydown box requires a different spring.
