OK - am I being stupid?
Checking the ignition timing as it won't go, led me to the following, which confused me.
When I check the points off the bike I get open circuit with the point open, closed circuit when closed. Correct.
Fair enough.
When I fit the points to the mag, I get closed circuit whether points are open or closed. Surely this is not right?
The centre bolt is not supposed to be insulated from the centre, fixed side of the points, right? (the bolt seems to have a taper to centralise the body of the fixed point and, hence, the baseplate of the points.) I guess this how the primary circuit gets to the points?
However, I still seem to get a spark.

I've had my share of problems! The 'Brightspark' web site has a vast amount of interesting information about them.

All sounds fine. The low tension circuit is in series with the points. So when they open, they break into a ring round which current flows. So you don't get infinite resistance when the pointer open. It's why you check when the points open using 'fag paper's and not a bulb.
