One of my Jubilee coils gave up recently and the bakerlite on the other gave way too. So I'm taking the opportunity to upgrade to 12v. Of I went bought 2 12v coils ,regulator and amp meter, I have a boyerin the shed. I should have read up first (2 6v coils)
My question is should I wire the 2 coils in parallel rather than in series? Any other advice sould I remove the orange wire should I fit a capacitor etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Tim.
Hi Tim, You cannot use two…

Thankyou. I was going to do…
Thankyou. I was going to do it in stages. Keep the points get it running on 12v , then fit the Boyer a week later. It looks like that's the way to go that will give me time to get some more coils.

You can use 12 IN parallel provided....
..provided you fit steering diodes. This would then become a non preferred way of wiring but it would work. There are full details of the 12V conversion on the lightweight on my web site. The original Wipac coils have their output at 90 deg so they fit under the tank very well and they last 'for ever' 2X 6V would be the preferred way. 2X12V in series will work. 12V in parallel will need steering diodes.
The orange wire you refer to might be the alternator wire going to the switches, yes it can be disconnected but you have to connect up the Alternator Orange wire. By capacitor perhaps you mean the 2MC replacement on the DC of the regulator/rectifier, in which case it is 'recommended' again see my web site for all the facts.

Im not sure what steering…
Im not sure what steering diodes are,yes the Orange wire was I believe for emergency starting.Ill have a look on your web site thankyou. If I keep the points for a short time would I need to replace the Condenser to use the 12v coils? Tim.

The orange wire..
The orange wire I have identified on the original wiring is the alternator high output that come in when the head light is used, otherwise you get a flat battery. Steering diodes would be fitted in the Boyer to coils circuit. If you must use 12V coils in parallel then I can supply the diodes and the diagram.
The normal way with this upgrade is to use the original Wipac 2X6V coils with the Boyer when you convert to 12V. Converting to 12V and then changing the coils to 12V for a short time then changing the coils back to the original 2X6V would seem a backward step. Each set of points has a condenser, they should work on 12V But changing them to a car 12V one would be a lot of work, and if temporary not recommended as to wasted effort.

Orange wire - convert to 12v
1) Contact Al Osborn for a Wiring Diagram on the changes you need to make to the wiring.
2) One of the changes is to disconnect the Resistor wire
3) Another change is to connect together the orange & light green wire coming from the alternator. This makes one wire for the current, the white wire is your 2nd wire. Those two go to the Regulator/Rectifier that replaces the original rectifier. (Usually 2 yellow wires match on the Reg/Rect).
4) There are other wires to makes safe.

Al, How about one of those…
Al,
How about one of those twin output coils will they work with a Boyer system?

Lightweight 12volt conversion
Hi Dan,
I have used a twin output coil with Pazon ignition without any problems for a few years both on my Electra and my A65..

Twin output coil
Yes - you should be able to use a 12v twin output coil on your 12v conversion Navigator.
Check that the low tension side has about 5Ω impedance.

Thank you for your reply. I…
Thank you for your reply. I found a 6v coil left over from another bike so I used two 6v coils in the end. thanks Tim.

Hi Tim,
You cannot use two 12v in parallel. It must be two 6v in series.
capacitor not required.
not sure which is the orange wire.
