Can anyone please tell what the small red lenses on my jubilee headlight are for, they fit onto a small square hole either side.

Absolutly right.
I think this was only done for a year or so, and it lead to a high rate of speedo bulb failures.
In 1960 the wiring diagram shows the speedo bulb on at the same time as the back light instead of being on all the time. At that point, the red 'telltales' in the headlamp were removed.

In other words it is in effect an ignition light which stays on all the time the ignition switch is on. It doesn't go off when the alternator comes on charge which is what you normally expect.
