It probably seemed like a good idea at the time - although I very much suspect that alcohol may have been involved!
Probably any modest power gain would have been partially offset by the mechanical losses in that extensive gear drive.
But as above, I take my hat off to the man!

Sorry, spelling error. Search the above spelling and there are a few articles on him.
He raced with my cousin at a ripe old age in the late 60's. He made several large modifications to engines as his family had an engineering business. I had a picture of his gear driven solution but can't lay my hands on it just now. Cousin had chance to buy a supercharged Alvis of his, but opposition from her indoors prevented it.
