If you have to ask why!

Forums

Friend of mine visited a couple of  motor museums recently, and has sent me this pic.

Does seem an awful lot of effort, but then again, if you have to ask why......

If you have to ask why, you should also ask yourself why you get out of bed in the morning.

...Charlie Scognina modification back in the 50's. Full gear train drive to top end....  Because he can, hats off!

It probably seemed like a good idea at the time - although I very much suspect that alcohol may have been involved!

Probably any modest power gain would have been partially offset by the mechanical losses in that extensive gear drive.

But as above, I take my hat off to the man!

Jonathan, I've just Googled Charlie Scognina, but it comes back with no relevant results. Can you tell us any more please!

Sorry, spelling error.  Search the above spelling and there are a few articles on him.

He raced with my cousin at a ripe old age in the late 60's. He made several large modifications to engines as his family had an engineering business. I had a picture of his gear driven solution but can't lay my hands on it just now. Cousin had chance to buy a supercharged Alvis of his, but opposition from her indoors prevented it.

Cheers

Jon
