Hybrid N15CS Wiring

Forums

I have recently purchased a 1968 N15CS and want to get up to speed with the wiring in order to check that everything electrical is Ok. I have a pack of original Lucas wiring diagrams, including one for the 650 Matchless G12, which looks like it may be very similar to the N15, can someone please advise if this is this the case?

Hi Andy

Your best source of info on these bikes is Anthony Curzon, the NOC Hybrid expert.  I suggest that you email him at hybrids@nortonownersclub.org

Ostensible most bikes around this period where the same electrically . But there is a few mistakes and preferred items for the diag shown. Biggest mistake is the electrical position of the Zener diode in the diagram, with it on one end of the ignition coil -wrong. The live end of the Zener needs to be on the BRN/WHT from the rectifier (Negative). There needs to be a fuse and 1 off 12V battery. The two switches need to be considered next. they retain a partial switching of the alternator output. Retain it, if in good order and checkout the usability of the Zener. If the zener has failed/out of spec, there is no more of them so you will have to fit a regulator/rectifier. If so you do not need the alternator switching. Consider replacing the points for an electronic ignition.

All other electrical items are just about standard. Any other problems please get in direct touch.

Many thanks for the advice.

My bike has had electronic ignition and a voltage regulator fitted at some point, but the wiring needs a good tidy up and a lot of connectors need replacing and I will test all of the switch contacts. From what I have see so far, I don't  think that there is too much left of the original wiring harness, so I will need to draw  out my own wiring diagram to suit.

Motorcycle electrics are relatively simple, but It always amazes me how they can turn into such a mess following modifications that were supposed to deliver improvements!

Looking for recomendation for a battery, the expired one fitted is an SLA   5.3AH BB5L-B.

Are there any alternatives or higher quality batteries that will fit the N15CS battery box?
