On most of our bikes, the sealed beam unit is held in place in the headlamp rim by 3 or 4 wire "W" clips.Rummaging about in the garage today, thought I'd found a packet of these, but then realised although very similar, they were clips for retaing glass panes in the greenhouse.
A quick internet search revealed a pack of 4 "Lucas" clips, £2-3. £3 gets you 50 greenhouse clips. Think the latter are a bit bigger in their spread, but might get you out of a jam in an emergency- just raid the nearest greenhouse!
Let me know how you get on, as I'm unable to put this to the test.
I've used..

Hi Ulrich, the "greenhouse" clips I saw were 75mm tip to tip, the "legs" are 34mm.
