I just bought a diamond shape silencer. It can geometrically be put on both ways round. However the fixing bolt is nearer to one edge, and that must be the upper edge of the box.
The only internal baffle is a perforated tube about 9" long with its far end stopped off. But the only way it fits is with the baffle projecting in from the EXIT end, not the INLET ( which is what I expected).
Before I get in touch with the maker, does this make sense to anybody?
Thanks.

Baffled?
or muted? the perforated tube is the element that makes the gas change direction to escape, that's why the internal end is blanked off. If it were baffled it would extend the length of the route to the exit point. A mute can be in either end of a silencer, though more effective at the higher air speed end I believe...

Thanks Jonathan. By that…
Thanks Jonathan. By that definition it's a mute. On thinking about it, I can't see why it makes any difference which way the gas goes through it. By putting in the back, it will prevent the box being open at the back. I think it's OK. But silencers were very experimental in 1932 and not very efficient (not well designed by modern standards) as we know by the number of changes Norton made in the 30's.
I might end up not using it after all. I just like the look and it's correct for road use for the year of the bike.

Just a thought, but I know that armours do both left and right hand silencers of this type, the one I have has a better chrome finish on the outer face.
