On most of my English bikes, the ammeter needle moves a lot with the engine running. Is there any meter obtainable that is sufficiently dampened to give a fairly steady reading. Original look not needed, but size preferably same.

Its all part of the charm. …
Its all part of the charm. You could fit a needle stop at the +5 amp point and wear a heated jacket like me. The needle will be wedged up against the stop most of the time, trying to balance the load.

Ammeters!!
Let me tell you a story. I once had a European customer say that his ammeter was 'very friendly' as it was always waving at him!!
Then even earlier I did the above trick, Take the unit off the bike, upside down drill a hole, fill with oil (3 in one was all we had) BUT then how do you seal the plastic once it has oil in it? Eventually the oil leaked out, No problem I then had a bubble-handy artificial horizon for cornering.
Then that all leaked out-Norton with an oil leak-no problem.
Eventually all oil lost, still no problem enough oil left in Ammeter to dampen the waggles.

You can get the original to work by drilling a small hole in the bottom and using that to fill it with clear silicone oil and then plugging the oil. Not found any version around that works without that modification except an LED ammeter which is the wrong size and looks out of place.
