Kickstart shaft oil seal

Forums

Hi Guys....
Has anyone else experienced trouble, specifically oil leakage, from the around the kickstart shaft when using the "X-ring" oil seal supplied by Andover Norton?
I fitted one when I rebuilt the gearbox recently and was surprised to find a small puddle of oil from under the gearbox after the bike had been left standing for a while. The shaft is perfectly fine with no sign of any wear or damage. I carefully removed the X-ring from the cover and measured it. It was only 3.5mm wide while the location groove was 4.5mm wide so no sideways compression. It was also a loose fit on the shaft, so no radial compression either. I'm not really surprised that it leaked. I cured the problem by fitting a Viton O-ring, 4mm cross section, 25mm I.D. which gave a small amount of radial compression on the 1" diameter shaft.
Any comments?

... you shouldn't need to use silicone if the X ring is correctly dimensioned.

My o ring slot is much too deep.  I had to fill it with silicone to fit the o ring, and the same when I came to fit an x ring.  I still don't know if previous owner "improved" the design.
