rear mudguard

hello,

on my, 56  19s

just filling in some holes that have rotted through from the support brackets that were brazed on from behind of the mudguard . does anyone know if these were fitted to all mudguards of the time or just the select few.

Not sure whether the '55 ES2 is the same.Barry, but I'm pretty sure I don't have any additional supports i/s the mudguard.

thanks for that,

i have been trying to straighten up the mudguard for a while now. just wondered if there was any reason for the strengthening brackets. i think i will just weld them back in place.

I had the rear mudguard of my 56 ES2 break in two at a Rally. I expect having the carrier and camping gear supporting it probably expedited it's demise.

I welded a sheet about 2" wide of 1.5mm steel down both sides with oxy acetylene. 

A previous repair had used lead tin solder as filler. 

I'm lucky I'm still alive!

It made for quite a neat repair, by my standard at least. 

I would definitely put the support brackets back!

There is a thread in this section headed "Norton ES2 1955 Rear Mudguard". Barry which shows the i/s having the strengtheners you show so I stand corrected.

It looks like they helped support the lifting handles each side of the mudguard - at least they did on an ES2.

hello, George,

i had a look at the thread .i get what you are saying, strength support for the lifting handles. its a case of my mudguard has been off the bike lying around for a while now, i am forgetting what attatches to it.

you were lucky there. i know what you mean, what with the seat attatching to the mudguard and the rack and rider the weight soon adds up. i think i will weld them back in place . i will replace the corroded metal on the mudguard with new plates, they will be welded all the way around . any filler will be purely cosmetic. it wont be perfect , but what is.

I can confirm George's message as my 1955 ES2 has these curved strengthening flat bars inside the mudguard.  It would have helped support the the rear of the dual seat and given extra support for the lifting handles.  Having the removable tail end of the mudguard these strengtheners would keep everything in line when the tail section was removed.

thanks for that ,mine has the rear section that has a hinge. its a bit rough metal wise around the hinge, so replacing  metal to suit .i have tacked on the rear section for now until i can sort the hinge out. mine has not got the cover inside / underneath that goes over the hinge. is that a seperate piece would you know.

I've noticed that a coupe of guys have mentioned the weight of the rider and gear being supprted by the mudguard. Without rushing down to check I'm fairly certain the saddle on my '55 ES2 is supported off a bracket which in turn is supported by the top end of the swinging arm saupports not by the mudguard. Is mine a P.O. bodge?
