My 99 with K2f can be quite hard to start, difficult to get reliable idle. Bike rides well at moderate speeds but sometimes cuts out at junction and can be hard to restart. It won’t rev out at higher speeds either and if I really rev it up on the stand it misfires badly. Got new plugs, copper cables, non resistor caps, new pickups, points gapped and free, ATD nice and free, did have a job with timing as points not opening 180 degrees to each other, about 8 degrees different split the difference. Left pipe is bluer than right, tappets all good. Single monobloc has all new parts, fuel level checked with clear float cover, fresh fuel no muck in system. I am suspecting the mag, got one of those solid state capacitors to put in Any other ideas please? Thanks

Your mag is in need of a rebuild.
At low speeds a K2F isn't great for powerful sparks hence the need for resistor free plugs and leads, and small (25thou) plug gaps, otherwise you get difficult starting.
At higher speeds/loads, voltage required to get a spark increases due to increased cylinder pressure (throttle is open more). A dying mag cannot deliver this.
Add in hot start issues (condenser?) And everything says mag on its way out.

As Phil said, mag has to be a suspect. A simple test, Remove plugs bring both leads to same side of bike set up with new plugs on engine ,turn off lights ,get someone to spin engine over for a good period and closely observe the sparks which should be totally regular and a nice blue colour. Not a proper mag test but may help you to decide if you need to get the mag serviced.

Paul Wolf is the NOC's own 'mag man'. What sort of turn round time he has I have no idea, but if he can't do it, at the very least he should be able to advise you on who he feels is reputable and who isn't.
Then you can also look at the cost vs originality argument of "do you go electronic or stay with the mag" - powerful arguments for both, and I'm probably prodding a hornets nest just mentioning it. Just be aware that the decent mag guys usually have extended turn round times and you don't want to miss summer do you?

Points difference is way too much and it sounds like your magneto needs a good service. More than 4* difference usually suggests the bearings are on their way out.
