Could anyone confirm that after fitting the bottom bushes to the stanchion and tightening the lower nuts they should still be free to rotate on the stanchion? I am in the process of replacing stanchions (1 leg leaks due to pitted chrome), along with bushes & seals. On the old (non-original) stanchions the shoulder is slightly longer than the bush so the nut tightens on the stanchion, leaving the bush free. On the new parts the shoulder is slightly shorter than the bush so the nut clamps the bush. Would like to be sure which is correct before discussing with supplier of new parts.

I'm also fairly sure that the bush should be free. The bush being steel, I think the nut would have to be extremely tight to cause distortion. There is also a tab washer which should prevent loosening. I'm told that on Commando forks the bush is held by a circlip so in that application it is free. I will contact the supplier.
Another way of asking the same question: Does anyone in the club have access to original factory drawings of the long roadholders? If the bush length and distance from the bottom of the stanchion to the shoulder were known it would be obvious if the bush is free or clamped.

Short Roadholders
On Short Roadholders a circlip holds the bush in position on the end of the stanchion but allows it to rotate and move up and down a little.

Supplier has confirmed that bushes should be free. It sounds like the bush dimensions are OK for the later circlip retainers but sometimes a little too long for the earlier stanchions. They offered to shorten the bushes in their workshop but as the bushes are unplated steel I can do the job on my own lathe.

... that the nut should tighten on the stanchion. Otherwise the nut could distort the bush and possibly loosen.
