Navigator ratchet spindle O-ring size

Forums

Hello all!

Can anybody tell me the correct size of the two small  o-rings in millimeters if possible sealing the ratchet spindle against the gear lever shaft ?

So I can get them locally, hopefully.

Part No. 040079

Today I adressed the leaking gearbox of my 1961 Navigator and tried two square o-rings No. 040079SQ from NOC spares. The gearchange shaft did not turn and the cover had to be hammered on the shaft to fit. These square rings are too large. Unfortunatly the original round o-rings broke while poking them out of the grooves of the spindle.

Thanks for your help

Regards

Hi Uli, I had the same problem with the club seal, but I think you are supposed to remove the bush to fit it?  I think I fitted a normal o ring in the groove and another between the shaftvand the case, it’s holding so far!

This very week I did the same. Experimented with different gauge O rings, silicone grease for an interferance fit. To ease the gear change shaft ,you could ream the inside shoulder slightly to ease assembly,  less of a guillotine affect. On the kickstarter shaft I modified an electrical back box grommet to execute a nifty seal with the gearbox cover.

An option is to buy a lifetime's supply, e.g:

I've no idea what their minimum order size is.

I bought similar metric and Imperial O-ring sets some decades ago, and I'm tempted to order the box referenced above.  I've used very few of my O-rings, but I usually have the one I want whenever I need one.  And they can be cut (dead square with a scalpel) and superglued into other exact lengths.

They seem to be X-rings in the USA and quad-rings in the UK.

I was at a local firm  which sells o-rings and other stuff for sealing things.

We tried 6x2 mm rings on my spare ratchet spindle and my gearchange shaft.

They fit very well and the shaft could be moved with the right amount of tightness.

1 bought 10 rings just in case..

I think the Imperial Brexit size is 1/4" x 1/16".

Thanks for your posts and help!

Uli
