I am restoring a 1935 ES2 and want to stick with the original 3 brush dynamo setup.
Can anybody tell me the value of the resistance across the switch which is used for 1/2 charge.

Seems like a good reply above, shame about my name though! The dynamo regulator is sold by several people including myself as A O Services. Albeit Al Osborn.
Every time we come on this question of the three brush dynamo we are told by the dynamo repairers to convert to a two brush and fit a decent regulator and get on with your ridding as opposed to watching the ammeter re charge rate.
But perhaps you want the ES2 to be in a museum!

Hi Andy,
Whilst normally a devotee of keeping things original, I decided after several blown bulb episodes following prolonged daylight running to recently convert my 1936 electrics to 2 brush configuration with a V-Reg II Dynamo Voltage Regulator from Al Osbourne hidden on the vertical frame tube under the saddle. So far it has given fit and forget reliability with the ammeter showing all that it is supposed to. Still in two minds whether to continue with the original rewired 4 position switch or fit a slightly later 3 position one.
I have the original resistor which you are welcome to if of any use. I believe the wire is original but I fitted a new former to it as theone it came withhad disintegrated. As you can see from the image below it seems to be 4.5 ohms.
