I was delighted to discover that my newly acquired Commando has electronic ignition fitted. The guy I bought it from didn't think it had so I didn't check.
Question is (as a points man) how do I check the setup and timing etc with the electronic ignition?
Thanks folks.

Hi Andy,
I have an 850 MkIII and if you have the same it is simple but you do need a strobe light.
Remove the inspection cover from the primary drive cover (just above the alternator), inside here you will see a short curved indicator with lines on it showing degrees. All you need to do is start the bike with a strobe light connected 'in the usual way' and wind the revs up to about 3/4000 RPM. There is a line on the alternator rotor that will be 'fixed' by the light, The timing should be around 32 degrees BTDC.
I have an early Boyer ignition, it may be slightly different for other kit.
If you have something different, let me know and I will alter the instructions.
Regards
Tony

Thanks Dave and Tony. Will get a strobe. Any recommendations in terms of maker and expected price?

Hi Andy,
My one is very old so cannot really comment. You can find the Draper one for 20 - 25 quid. should do the job. Example :-

Hello Andy,
Check what type, model and manufacture your ignition is and Google how to set it up. You'll probably need an ignition timing strobe, get the best you can. Some electronic ignitions such as the Boyer range are set at full advance at 5000 rpm. A cheap strobe cannot power up its light fast enough and as the delay increases with revs you'll set the timing too advanced. Most battery powered strobes should be OK, but it's worth checking.
If you can first check the timing marks are accurate, some have been found to be quite a bit out. When setting the timing get a mate hold or sit on your Commando with it off the centre stand or you'll end up chasing it round the garage. If you don't you'll get a greater understanding of how good isolastics are.
I would recommend you knock one or even two degrees off the full advance timing due to modern unleaded petrol.
Commandos are a unique old beast and can take a bit of getting used to, but you'll find are worth all the pain.
All the best with your new acquisition,
Dave
