Outer gear ratchet

Forums

Hi all . I'm having trouble getting all the gears to select when fitting the mechanism . I can get all gears using the pawl on the ratchet and then using the gear foot lever but when I put everything together and fit the outer casing I can only get neutral and 2nd gear . Am I missing something or is there a specific position the pawl should be on the ratchet when putting it back together with the outer casing ? . Plenty of swear words in the air at the moment . The gear is in neutral at the moment . Thanks Graham

Could it be that on assembly the pawl spring is not staying on the pawl?
I had similar trouble, only one gear would select.   Got the spring to stay put and all is well.

Thanks John , yeah that's what I was thinking also but needed clarification. Johns photos help a lot as well . It's better to look at photos rather than try to explain things . Cheers John

Like John says.

Here is my cover. Correct pedal return spring fitting close round brass bush. Not heavyweight item.
Pawl spring right length, bent to just touch both sides of pawl in centre position. Holds pawl for fitting of cover.
In this position just lightly hold pawl and twist clockwise or anticlockwise. It should feel a smooth action.
I need to polish the pawl and not use a rusty spring for a slick gearchange.

Thank you Peter . The photos are a great help . It's good to clarify things are in the right position rather than trying to explain it  . I'll keep you informed . I've posted a pic of my bike so far . I'm really pleased with how it's coming on . Thanks again

I believe the gear cam plate can be in any position (any gear) when fitting the cover.
But the pawl has to be as shown in my photos. Not tipped either way but straight between the springs.

To keep and adjust the pawl when locating the gearbox cover I fish a cord around the pawl out the gearbox cover hole. I then wrap the cord round my index finger and fit the  cover. The cord holds the pawl until it is on the selector. If all is ok I just fish out the cord. I t works for me.
