is there a trick to getting the video to run in Windows 10, I have VLC and Gom, neither recognise the files yet it runs fine in my old coal driven vista pc?

AFAIK Windows 10 does not generally include a DVD player as earlier versions did
and also as you imply some players look to work differently in earlier versions of Windows.
I tried various free players and found PotPlayer to work best under Windows 10.
Worth a try?
