Hi All,
I am trying to get a Mk2A Interstate (reg. in 75) back to as standard as possible and I am confused about the Lucas Aluminium switches ( I bought it with the wrong Mk3 black ones on it). I have bought a left hand one that I believe to be "dip and horn & flasher", but now when I look for the other one, they all seem to be for sale as "Dip & horn controls" regardless of whether they are left or right handed, they all seem to have the same Lucas part number (169SA). According to my reference books, I need a right hand one that is "turn signal, engine stop, and spare button", the part number in my parts book says 39951 with description "R.H.Switch Cluster only (direction indicator etc.)". The illustration in the book shows it fitting to a back plate (pre disc i suppose), but mine has the master cylinder brake assembly, On the next page there is an illustration of the master cylinder models and it does not show a different switch cluster so it must be the same one. I know that the Mk3 is different all together, but how many pre MK3 variations are there? and should mine have right hand indicator switch like the book (printed 73) suggests or had it changed on the later Mk2A's.
I could always buy a pair of Lucas type Sparx and wire them to whatever side they are oriented for, or are they ambidextrous? but I have one genuine one already and would like the indicators on the correct side.
Can anyone help to point me in the right direction please. I have found myself falling to sleep at night trying to remember which thumb I used to use 35 years ago.
many thanks,
Rich (Sheffield)

Check out these excellent photos from Andover Norton's site. They illustrate the two versions quite and gives you an impression of what is what and what to look after!

Thanks Guys for the early replies, The Mk3 switchgear was put on the bike just to get it going by the previous keeper, it was just old stuff that he cobbled together. The bike had been dead for 20 years. I need to check the Master cylinder to see if its the pre Mk3? or not.
I will post again soon, Rich.

Hello Richard,
Must be a very late mk2a, may even have had the mk3 set up from new? Iknow of one other Commando thatis mk2a in all respects except the switch gear/warning light panel, the owner swears that's how it was when he bought it new in Jan 75! ??But you are correct in your assumption that for mk2a,you need theturn signal/engine stop/spareswitch cluster, & for me, that's the R/H unit, although they are ambidextrous, you can fit them whichever way round you prefer. They will fit to a cable type back plate or an early master cylinder, but not a mk3 master cylinder. (The early mastercyl's fit arround the handlebar, with the switch cluster foming the other half of the 'clamp', on mk3's (or at least the mk3 switch gear etc I have) the switch gear clamps arround the handle bar & the master cyl has a flat face & bolts to the switch gear.
I'm not aware of any other variations used on Commando's but make sure you don't get a Triumph/BSA unit as they use the main toggle as a simple on/off kill switch & the buttons are both spare, the toggle is usually red on these & the wires are different colours, but otherwise they look the same !
Hope this is of some help,
Regards, Tim
