While waiting for a replacement I have found an old 70" cable that appears identical except that the speedo end cable protrusion is about double the recommended 3/8" for an early chrono . Thinking of cutting off the excess with Dremel. With my luck the cable will unravel, Anyone done this ?.

Should be OK...
... I do know that if you have too much protrusion it wrecks a chronometric movement. The cables you have may be for a magnetic instrument?

Speedo cable surgery
Chrono and Magnetic are different---- the Magnetic cable is slightly thicker. If you fit a Chrono cable to a Magnetic Speedo it can turn within the square, giving an erratic reading and possibly rounding it out and ruining it.

Speeo cable
I cut the end off my speedo cable with a pair of wire cutters, and it did not unravel.

That sounds hopefull. …
That sounds hopefull. Interesting that the cables are slightly different gauge. puzzling that my spare short nut armoured outer ( for chrono) has a long reach inner(for magnetic) .perhaps its a mongrel cable mixup. I am also interested why the std (up to 1963) chrono cable is 5 foot 71/2" long and the 64 ss is 70" long , an extra 21/2" . perhaps because mounted on a fork bracket ? or maybe run along the top of the featherbed?. You would think by now all the mysteries of the dommies would have been well discovered, but here we are 60 years on still scratching the surface. What will we do with ourselves once all is Known. My old 99 seems perfectly happy with the 70" extra long cable.

My new speedo inner cable …
My new speedo inner cables (to fit into an orriginal Smiths outer) made by J J Cables turned up and fitted perfectly , was to be made to copy my old one , but JJ made a few minor changes that show they really know the job. Not dear either. I now have a spare new 70" chrono inner I would sell if someone is stuck.

Last time I shortened an inner speedo cable, I think the Dremel as we know it today, wasn't even invented. A Dremel cutting disc must be the ideal tool for that.
