Hello Folks
I'm struggling to find out the method of checking/maintaining the correct oil level in my upright gearbox (enclosed 'spam can' end cover type, 1950 Inter). I'm unfamiliar with this type of box, all the books I have speak of weights and volumes but I can't find any ref to a safe or correct level indication which to me seems the simplest way to make running checks without draining and starting again. There doesn't seem to be a level plug shown in the exploded diagrams either, but I'm maybe missing this. I've searched these pages but haven't had much luck yet, any advice appreciated. It's currently filled to the bottom of the oval cover to be safe while I do short shake-down runs but this is likely too much.
Cheers
Bruce
Maximum Oil Level

Refilled mine yesterday
And it confirms Richard's answer. I drizzled 1/2 pint into the filler hole and when it was all gone I could see the level on the bottom threads.

Gearbox filling.
Hi Bruce,
Yes, as Richard and Jon advise with the filler being at the back corner by the kick-start. The oval cover is only to access the clutch cable arm. This area does not need/have any oil inside it as it is only a dust cover which makes the older "dolls head" box look more modern. You should try and remove this oil with a syringe if you have one. The most suitable oil is a straight SAE50 grade, do not use a Hypoid oil as this can affect the phosphor bronze bushes. The oil gradually leaks out of the bottom linkage arm, so check the level at regular intervals. Also don't over tighten the large hexagon filler as this can crack the thin threaded area.

Thanks everyone…
...for the clarifications and advice. I've just been studying the 46-49 parts list and identified what I thought was the filler plug which Richard has indeed confirmed. I was intending asking why the box couldn't be filled through the oval cover - now I know! I will syringe out the excess, presume a drop left in the bottom won't matter?
Cheers

As the rest of the box is identical to the Doll's Head type, presumably the same procedure. Fill the oil until it's just visible on the threads of the filler plug at the rear of the cover. I use a Wesco type can as it's not the most accessible filler ever devised.
