The 850 engine I'm rebuilding came from a machine where the engine was bolted solid into the frame. How would I be able to tell whether it has had it's balance factor altered?

There would likely be a number of additional holes bored into the flywheel and maybe the big-end counterweights too. Existing holes might also have been weld-filled.
The attached photo shows my original factory balanced Mk3 crank with just two holes drilled into the flywheel. Of course, other cranks may have needed more, but not many I would suggest.

Without getting technical I would imagine an incorrect factor would make the machine unbearable at most revs .
