I have a friend with a Mk III who is complaining that he's getting through too many expensive sprag clutches (I know, a common complaint!).
I have a recollection that a Fair Spares "expert" commented to me that it is wrong to torque the backfire overload device to 50 lbs. Can anyone comment or give advice on the best way to set it up?

Hi DavidI followed the oldbritts article by welding an old socket onto a thrust washer - 50 ft-lbs is correct. My mk3 original was only 36 ft-lbs and spun out too easily on engaging the starter. Another one I had was 48 ft-lbs & I have fitted that at present with a new 18 sprag unit (there are 14 piece units also around). It is imperative that the engine sprocket and starter gear are within tolerance. The starter is a 4 brush coverted standard unit - all is working sweetly at the moment (touch wood).Cheers Alan

If you have electronic ignition (mainly Boyer) then the low voltage during starting can cause backfires. I have a cure for this which I have been testing this season so far without problems. I will write a report soon.

I used to own a T160 and that wouldn't start on the electric with a Boyer ignition. About 10 years ago I investigated the problem and developed a solution that enables the Boyer to work at anything over about 6 volts. I've attached an article I wrote at the time. Perhaps this is relevant to the solution you have come up with?

Yes this is basically what I have, my solution will run from 6V to to 36V and give a steady 12V output. Bit overkill I know but it does the job. It also uses an 'off the shelf' item.
One thing that concerned me when implementing this solution was that I waseffectivelyregulating the 'earth' line. My brain started to hurt trying to work out if it did not make a blind bit of difference.
Your solution and mine both seem reliable so that has seems to haveanswereditself.
I shall probably do a write up for Roadhlodershamelesslyplagiarizingyour article.
