Does anyone know of a good supplier who could provide a decent speedo cable for a 16H? I need the type that fits Girders with a front wheel speedo drive. Internet searches produce no end of results, but all supply the post war, rear wheel drive type only.

Thanks Richard I will give them a call.
The bike has a WD engine and frame number, but when I I acquired it, it had been converted to roadholders and a rear wheel speedo drive. I have managed to obtain a set of what I believe are earlier Girders, as they have bushed spindles (I understand the WD forks did not) and the mounting for the speedo is not as per the WD diagrams I have, as the grease nipples are in the wrong places. However, they are definitely Norton Webb forks, they have rebound springs and the Norton front wheel, complete with it's drive, is a perfect fit, and 100% correct.
The bike has been fairlyuniversally"civilianised" since the war. It now has a standard 80mph chronometric Smiths gauge, so I am not sure the Jaeger style cable will be correct. It is the only reference photo I have though.
I am sure JJ cables will be able to supply my needs either way, thanks again for you help.
Paul

No, but don't you wish the NOC could help you with this? 16H's were very common. You'd think you could type a part number into the NOC database and find a supplier. If only that database existed.
Good luck with your search,
Graeme

But that is what just happened, the database being the knowledge of the club members.

JJ Cables (they're in the services guide) can make a speedo cable to your requirements. As far as I'm aware, they are the only source of the thick Jaeger-type clip fixing cables as per your illustration (these were used pre and early WW2). The construction is not identical to the originals which had a spring outer, the new ones have a more conventional system but they look OK and they work.
Length will depend on whether your speedo is mounted centrally or with the off-set bracket used on later WD16Hs.
I calculated the length for my central unit at 25" and it fits well. The alternative bracket would be a little shorter, I'd think.
Richard, just to let you know I placed an order with JJ cables at the recent Kempton Park Autojumble. They were very helpful and new exactly what I wanted. Total cost, including correctly sleeved cable, and I am grateful to you for the measurement of length.
