Registration question, help please

Hi all

Im reassembling (restoration is too strong a word) a 1957 model 19S, its been off the road for donkeys years. Im now nearly there and almost ready for `taxing` . I`m confused by the registration document, I have a latest V5C document but the Date of first registration states 1979.....?

The DVLA states that motorcycles MADE before 1960 are MoT exempt and tax exempt if MADE before 1974.

Will I have to approach the DVLA (how?) to get the V5C changed in order to get exemptio from MoT and Tax in order to be legal. Do I need to contact DVLA with proof that the old slogger was made in 1957 ?

Any help much appreciated

Hi John,

Check section 3 of the V5c, titled special notes. If it has the wording 'Was registered &/or used. Declared manufactured 19??' or similar, you can do everything at the post office. You may need to change the taxation class to historic, just fill in the appropriate changes section, & apply for the tax disc. The p/o will keep the page of your V5c & send it to DVLA & youâll get a new amended one in due course. If you donât have the declared year of manufacture in sec 3, I think youâll need a dating letter from the club, but best to give DVLA a ring & theyâll tell you what you need to do, Iâve usually found them to be very helpful.

Regards, Tim
