I am in the process of building a triton and can anybody help me with answers to the two following questions :
1 Is it necessary to fit indicators on a classic bike.
2 What is the process for registering as I do not have any relevant paperwork, only frame/engine numbers etc.

you will have to get a dating cert from a recognised club official, this will be used to date your machine, it will probably be examined by a club official before this is issued, apply for a registration with this certificate and then DVLA will send a chap round to confirm the machine and that details are correct, everything O.K they will issue an age related non transferable registration no,
BUT
be advised there has been some controversy over dating and there are occasions when they will date the machine to the latest date of a fitment
ie an aquaintance of mine built a BSA from scratch with a '64 frame but fabricated a front end from a Hinckley Triumph in order to have the forks and disc brake, he had to remove it and loosely replace the originals as it would have otherwise invited a later registration [incurring vel payment ]
kind regards
Thanks for that Richard, I presume having my featherbed dated by this organisation they can supply a certificate.

I'm sure the club will have a recognised dating officer, have a look in roadholder, as an aside the Vincent spares dept of the VOC built a completely new twin from spares, as all was new the vehicle had to be fitted with all modern requirements and undergo a SVA test before it could be registered, it was for all intents and purposes a new machine and treated as one. kind regards

It would be a very good idea to talk with the Club twins officer as soon as possible. Under their definition of a 'Reconstructed Classic' built from more than vehicle, DVLA state that it must be confirmed by the club as "A True reflection of the marque" Whether Triton actually became a 'marque' may be open to debate (bikes were registered as such but at one time specials could be registered under any name the builder chose).
I fear that you may be about to find out why Featherbed frames with V5s fetch such high prices. If the numbers are clear and unaltered, a frame without documents could be used to build a Norton in keeping with the original machines.
However, DVLA seem to be in the habit of altering their interpretations of eligibility despite the underlying legislation not having been altered.
I suspect that there is a real risk of a Q plate and a 17 digit VIN number.
