Hi all,
Coming to the end of a rebuild of my 750 Commando and have just bought a pair of unused Mk. 2 Amal’s from a friend who does not need them anymore. They are 32 mm as are my ports and are fitted with no.3 slides and 240 main jets.
My question is do you jet Mk.2’s the same as Mk.1 concentrics which I believe would normally have 3 1/2 slides and about 220 mains as a starting point?
I know every engine differs and I often have to make changes away from standard but I have not dealt with Mk.2’s before.
Can anybody share their experience with these?
Many thanks,
Phil Norris

Hello Phil, I've just added to the thread 'Starting a Fastback' that may be of help.

Mk2 Amals
I have run Amal Mk2's on two different Commandos quite successfully both in single carb and twin carb formats. I believe I did copy the original Mk1 jet sizes etc. But as Mark says it's very important not to open the throttle when using the choke on an Amal Mk2 carb when starting. I seem to remember having to fit a smaller size of jet in the choke system, the carbs seem to come fitted with a No.50 jet. In all cases the engines started and ran better after reducing the size of this jet (in my experience). I'm not sure, but think I used either a No.25 or 35 for the choke jet.

Mk2 Amals
I have used 32mm mk2 Amal’s for many years. I have a1970 roadster with 30 mm inlet ports and breathing through a k&n air filter roughly half the width of the standard filter. Settings as follows, main jets 240. Needle jets .106. Pilot jets 25. Cold start jets 50. Slide 3. Needle 2A1 position 3. When cold starting i normally switch on fuel and choke then turn the engine over two or three times with ignition off, turn on ignition open throttle one third usually goes first time.If having trouble starting when hot try using the choke and one third throttle

Hi everyone, sorry for late…
Hi everyone, sorry for late reply to you all.
Thank you very much for all your thoughts, I think I’ll make a start with using the same settings as for the MK. 1’s and see how it goes.
Thanks again,
Phil

Sorry Phil can’t help you but thought a response might be at least appreciated.
I have the Amals on my Combat at standard settings and still have not got the setup right yet. Tired of clearing the idle circuit. With the work I’ve done in the last year only ran a couple of tanks through them. I am likely to switch carbs from the originals down the line.
