Hi guys - ES2 suddenly started jumping out of gear on the overrun. Most unnerving.
On dismantling the box I found that the 20T gear on the layshaft (3rd) - or layshaft free pinion as it's called in the spares book - has a radial groove across the outer face between two of the dogs.
Any clues as to what could have caused it?
Ta!

Laydown gearbox woes- again
Could it be a slinger groove for oil? A PO perhaps? I can’t see one on the pics I’ve found of the pinion.

Perhaps PO put it onto a grinding wheel to tidy up a chipped tooth? It doesn't explain jumping out but...does the groove affect the rear face of the dog? We can't see. If the dog has lost its reverse slope, that could explain jumping out of gear.

A good thought, David, but the groove doesn’t line up with the side faces of any of the dogs. I agree that it doesn’t impinge on the jumping out of gear. I just wondered what it was. I’m sure it has nil effect on the operation of the gears..Presumably be “reverse slope” you mean the dog should be tapered to be slightly thinner at its base?

Yes - the tips do wear - Are you sure the rod is adjusted correctly? It's all I can think off unless bushes are very worn. I think it's best adjusted so pins are slack in 2nd and 3rd. Then 1st and 4th take care of themselves. Clevis pins don't need to be a tight snug fit. They are are right angles to each other, so they each need to rock slightly in the 'wrong' direction.

I hope I can attach a pic of the pinion. It may help.
