Int Rally via Cherbourg

I have a cunning plan to go to the International rally via Cherbourg. Hoping to travel down to Portsmouth or Poole Wed evening, overnight ferry (maybe to Caen), ride down to the rally site on Thursday leave the rally site at sparrow-f--t on Monday and catch an evening sailing back. Is anybody else planning on that crossing rather than the Dover Calais option? I'm not looking to break any land speed records.

David - suggest you look at LD Lines Portsmouth - Le Havre ferry. Usually the cheapest and probably 90 miles or thereabouts closer to the rally.

Peter Cocks has been looking at a similar plan and may be worth contacting. If a group of 4 get together and share an overnight Portsmouth ferry cabin (4 berth), the extra cost only adds £20 to each person's fare.

Depending on date / time of travel, ferry company, discounts etc, return tickets from Portsmouth, including sharing a cabinrange from £120 to £180. That is booking now!!!

Portsmouth to Le Havre looks to be a more reasonable journey. It saveswhat can be aslow grind getting out of Cherbourg Port and possibly knocks 30 miles off thetotal run to the Rally site, if you ride the main roads/motorways.

Unless you have a SatNav or are very good at map reading,a cross-country journey will be a little challenging and probably take two days.

Thanks for that Phil and Alan,

I can take limited time off work so getting there and back needs to take minimum time (within reason)

Portsmouth is 60 miles nearer to me than Dover and a reasonable time on the ferry allows for some rest en-route. I'm leaning towards the Portsmouth -le Havre option.
