I've just completed a rebuild of my MkV 750 and after I get into 4th gear I cannot get it to go back through the lower gears. The gearbox was the only component I left untouched as it worked perfectly before the rebuild. The gear lever moves freely up and down but doesn't engage at all. I've rocked the back wheel to 'load' the box but that makes no difference. HELP!
Pawl spring.

Exactly what happened to me,…
Exactly what happened to me, and the spring is a doddle to replace.

Other Causes
Another possible cause of gear selection problems is a cracked Gear Change Return Spring.....see attachment for reminder of part. It sits almost directly under the Pawl Spring.

This happened to me check washer flatness too
I did a full rebuild and the large “flat” washer caused the spring to bind. Replaced it worked great. Remember with a spanner you can manually move the gear plate from the side of the gearbox. You can apply a bit more incase it a selector fork issue.

Hi Robert, from your desc it sounds to me like the pawl spring isn't working.
Its either broken or worn or misshapen. If you look at the manual you will see that it has to sit just right across the selector pawl, to make the pawl click into place, going up and down. You should be able to hear it.
Its all in the outside cover so not very difficult.
