After a severe car accident I have a large amount of metal in both legs preventing me from starting my 1972 commando. I have owned it for the last 30 years.
As the bike had been standing for 6 months I gave a friend instruction on the finer points of starting a Commando.
We drained the fuel from the tank and carb and refuelled to about 2 inches from the bottom of the tank.
After about an hour!!! he had it running. It ran fine at lower revs butobviously had some fuel starvation.
A couple of months later I was out of the Wheelchair and bored stiff so I removed, dismantled and cleaned the carb while balancing on twocrutches.
The mesh filter covering the main jet was clogged so I removed it.
My mate tried to start the bike again and although he has mastered the technique it failed to start. It seems like fuel starvation.
A few months later and I notice the Norvil fiberglass tank has swollen about 1mm and has a distinct line at the height of the fuel.
My mate can not remember what fuel he purchased. I have used shell regular and added lead/octane booster for years with no problems.
I drained the tank and carb and left it dry.
Has thishappened toanybodyelse?
Is this due to ethanol in the fuel?
When did they start adding it to UK fuel?
I think I will give my single carb an ultrasonic bath and get my mate back while he still has the evolved right leg.
