Hi I've just been out on a very cold ride for an hour or so around town and twice it felt like it ran out of fuel, and stopped.
I fettled the fuel prime lever a couple of times assuming the car was empty and it restarted straight away.
3rd time was more scary on the dual carriageway at 60 to 70 when it died. No hard shoulder and NOONE moved to the outside lane. VERY SCARY! For a moment an arctic came by and I actually leaned in!
Anyway, primed it again and restarted.
Do these bike suffer carb icing? It's around 1 deg.
I've only had it a short while and this was probably my 4th ride on it.
I moved the reserve in and out each time in case it was that.
I've really no idea as it's recently had a good service and carb was drained, cleaned etc. No issues in warmer weather.
Thanks
A shaken and cold Paul!

Fuel level
Lance is right , if no fibre washer is shown on the early Amal detail , then the fuel level may be high. The plastic filter does not seal this juncture. Raised level may make for an easy cold start but also may make too rich. Recent new carbs can be fitted with washers but have been engineered to allow for it .The juncture is above fuel level and does not leak normally!!

So took out the washer but when I refitted the needle the float didn't move. It was a small plastic needle but I didn't measure it.
So either it's the wrong size float needle or it's been compensated for with the washer?
Darn tank tap is still weeping too, so may need to have another go at that.

Needle was OK. Float is plastic. Seems to be free with the washer in. Locks down with it off.
I'm also going to try a new tap from Paul Goff and I'll retain the original and will have another go at it at some point.

OK so back to the tap - I…
OK so back to the tap - I was going to use a new tap as mine is still dribbling after installing a new cork gasket, but the one sent isn't off, main and reserve - and I cannot find another, so back to my plunger tap and I'll try again.
Now how do you remove the circular finger pull plunger? I think this needs removing to slide on another cork. Its not rivetted like I've read that some are....see previous photo above. So assuming I knock it out with a small punch and then the reverse to refit?
It looks like theres a thread inside - is there supposed to be a screw in it?
Fun these old girls aren't they - such a simple job!!!

That looks practical, surprised there is enough gap between the panels . What did you have to do to the tap? Do you realise how rare the DL is on the road ? There are NO known examples of the 650 DL left .
