I'm hoping that someone can help me out. I have fitted the head steady and love it but the spring has now broken twice. My question is is the spring needed or should I chuck it. I followed all the installation instructions regarding the tensioning the spring

The spring isn't needed but it does a great job of reducing/eliminating the low frequency footrest vibes between 2500 and 3500rpm. The spring shouldn't snap, if it's mounted correctly it wont be taking a heavy load. Have you mounted the spring over the second tooth of the frame bracket? if so that might be the cause.
