Commando Mk3 starter switch problem

Hi everyone,

I am seeking help with my Norton Commando MK3. All lights working and control pannel lights to. Kill switch works. Starter button nothing at all,worked fine yesterday normally starts on button first time. Any ideas where to start?

I am in Fareham hampshire if anyone wants to play and enjoy ride out once working.

Hi Phil,

Lets work out which bit is failing first. I presume when you press the button, there is no clicking noise from the soenoid. Without wishing to insult anyone, this is the lump underneath the seat just above and behind the battery.

You should have two big hefty black cables on the solenoid and two thin wires. One black cable goes direct to the negative terminal on the battery and the other goes to the starter motor.

One of the thin wires will go up to the starter switch on the handlebars (this should be white / red) and the other goes to the coils (white / yellow). You can ignore the white / yellow for the moment.

Would you have access to a volt meter ?

With the ignition on and the button pressed you should find 12V on the white /red wire. If you do and the solonoid is not clicking then the solenoid is dead.

If you do not then you need to look at the handlebar switch and the loom feeding it.

Does the kill switch do what you expect ? The power feed to the kill switch is the same that powers the starter switch. If the engine runs with the kill switch in 'run' and stops in 'stop' then the wiring is working as far as the switch. There must be a problem either in the switch or between the switch and the solenoid.

Hi Tony,

Thanks for your reply, after cleaning kill switch, and termials on soleniod all appears to be working ok. Thanks for you help I will have to keep and eye on things to see how it goes.
