Centre Pop

Forums

I believe it was George Bernard Shaw who said, "Two great nations separated by a common language".

I need help with translating English into English.

My mechanics manual for an Electra tells me I should "centre pop" certain bolts.

Beats me as to what I should be doing to them.  :-)

Can anybody help me out?

Thanks.

My understanding has always been that you "centre pop" with a "centre punch". That is, you place the point of the punch on the joint between the bolt and nut threads and give it a stout whack with a hammer to distort the thread and prevent further movement.

So if I have understood this correctly .........you centre pop with a centre punch but off-centre because the thread is on one side.

Generally on most Norton Twins this is done to the crankshaft nuts and the oil pump screws. Are there any others???

The threaded studs that hold the cups and springs in the clutch are centre punched from the rear of the basket - just done an ES2 and a N15CS.

Any way don’t do that, use loctite, unless you never want to take it apart again, the threads are usually damaged when you do!
