What sort of filter would have been an original fitment. Would have to fit a 376 , so possibly a later model .

... air filters. Some carbs - usually the 276 pre-monobloc type - had a gauze on the intake which would stop major stuff getting through but no use for dust. In fact, it was probably there as a flame trap rather than a filter.

Hi Michael,   thats probably the most likely although i prefer something a bit more classic looking . a box that can be fitted with a pleated low resistance but efficiant paper element .On my99  I use a cut Austin mini filter bedded in on one side in a mastic seal . the box also needs a bit of crafty shielding from the elements to avoid getting wet. With modern fully synthetic lubricants and proper filtration a rebore should last for 100,000 miles or more ,  or at least till the 99 throws a rod !!.
