Norton Dominator Resurrection and electrical modifications

Forums

Good day all, the resurrection of my Dads Norton Dominator is going well and becoming some what of a 'reincarnation' in fact - photos to follow, just wondering if any one has any experience of substituting the standard lead acid battery for a smaller dry cell unit?
Thoughts please?
PS the ignition system is coil and on 6 volt system.

Kind regards Neil

If you search this forum on 'batteries' there is lots of information, Neil, as the topic crops up regularly.

I have used the dry cell type on my Domi for 3-4 years (6v, points and coil) rated at 8Ah with no issues. The battery type is variously marketed as Cyclon, Hawker or Enersys and they are available from RS and many other outlets. They seem to be a popular choice, but there are other options.

My ES2 (magdyno type) has a similar battery fitted, but I think is the 5Ah version.

Thank you Steve I'm interested in going dry cell as obviously its gives more choice as to where to fit the battery and they tend to be smaller.

The crucial thing here is NOT the ignition system but the battery charging system. Now this bike is 6V (at the moment) and coil, in which case it is almost certainly alternator with switched control of the out put. (ie original) Do NOT use the cyclons, they will over charge and dry out-fail. Batteries from the alarm world are also a NO NO as they tend to overcharge, dry out and fail. Mostly due to poor regulation. The charging system (6V Alt) is no good for either of these batteries. The minimum AHr for our bikes is never less than 5AHR.
There is further information on  aoservices.co.uk Info sheets/batteries.
By the way the Dommie battery box is plenty big enough for a 9Ahr lead acid, so there is no reason to 'squirrel away' a small one unless of course you are playing Cafe Racer, in which case 6V coil ignition is not really the way to go.
