Mornin' All,
Well I've done 500 summer miles on my Navigator since the engine rebuild and reckon it's high time I did an initial oil change. Are there any recommended brands or grades of oil I should look for? After that what's the chance frequency, 1500 miles?
Also, while I'm on the job are there any general 'good practice' tips you can offer? I do have a new 22148 return pipe adapter ready to fit and wondered if anyone has a picture of where to fit it. Currently I don't have the screw in filter mod, so will just give the gauze in the sump plate a thorough clean.

Don't ask what make of oil…
Don't ask what make of oil to use - no one likes an oil thread !!!! and you'll get more answers than you can shake a stick at. I have a screw on filter fitted at the bottom of the centre channel and use a good 20/50 - changed often! Generally if you don't have a filter then don't use a detergent oil, if you do, then do!

Oil change frequency
Nick,
I wondered like you. Investigated the Comma classic range as I find them quite good. The classic '40' monograde Comma recommend change every 1000 miles. The classic 20/50 multi grade Comma recommend change every 3000 miles.???
Suggest you research manufacturer info for your chosen oil rather than the myriad opinions you will get here.
Your Navigator has a Standard oil tank. The oil return piping is part of the tank. A de-luxe oil tank has a removable oil return connection 22148, which you don't have.
Welcome to the wonderful, often confusing, world of lightweights.

Thanks Peter, So, is it the…
Thanks Peter,
So, is it the case that the 22148 oil return connector isn't useable on bikes with 'standard' tanks? I bought it because I was interested in increasing oil flow to the top end and had read that this was a common mod.

22148 oil return connector.
Nick,
I believe that what you read was that oil flow to heavyweight rockers can be increased by fitting a lightweight 22148 oil return connector which has a smaller restriction than the heavyweight item and will divert more oil to the rockers.
It should have said " de-luxe lightweight".
You should have no trouble with your present set-up.

22148 fitment
As Peter H says above - its not needed.
The late John Hudson proposed fitting the Rocker Oil Feed adaptor 22148 (on the Return side to the tank) from a D/Lux (faired in) Jubilee to the Dominator range - to increase oil flow to the rockers.
For obvious reasons (its already there!), you do not need to fit this part to D/Lux Navigators.
On 'Standard' (or 'Sports') Jubilees & Navigators, 22148 is not fitted in any case, as the rocker oil feed is formed by a 'T' junction on the return side.

The recomended modification…
The recomended modification to a big twin does work , but sometimes too well , and can deliver more oil to the head than it can cope with . I have a modified version of this modification that tailors this to whats needed.

Oil change periods
Hi Nick, if you check out this website's 'Technical' section and look under 'General' and 'Gearbox oil' you will see a piece about comparison between EP/Hypoid 90 oil and SAE 50. Basically it says the Hypoid is the equivalent to the monograde. Having several small bottles of the EP/Hypoid I have filled my gearbox with that, it would seem likely that the same applies to the engine oil, or am I wrong in that? Does interval of change depend upon leakage from engine perhaps??? I am sure your Ethel is leakfree though.

Out with the Old, in with the New
Gave Ethel her oil change today, bang on the 500 mile mark since the engine rebuild. Amazing how black the 'old' stuff was. Refilled with Comma 20/50 and fitted a new gauze and a finned ally sump plate with magnetic drain plug, from the NOC shop. Bit fiddly fitting the longer studs but no real hitches, other than sore knees and elbows....
One thing I omitted to do is to clean the oil tank gauze, because I don't know where it is! Can anyone enlighten me, perhaps with a picture. Mine's a Standard model with the side tank.

Oil tank filter
Nick,
As already stated earlier the oil return connection, with it's restrictor and rocker feed branch, is integral with the standard lightweight oil tank.
The oil feed connector which is adjacent to the oil tank return connection, is removable. It is a lot of hassle to remove it but when you do, you will see a filter attached. Rather like the filter gauze on a petrol tap.
It is a big filter, fairly coarse gauze, and would stop gravel entering the engine if you maintain the bike on the beach.
Sludge seems to collect in the bottom of the oil tank over a long time and you have to remove the oil feed connector to clean the sludge out.
Hope you are enjoying the Navigator.

Hi Nick, an oil filter would be a good idea, does the club do a suitable conversion?
Likewise magnetic drain plugs in the various oil drains. The club does a much improved sump plate with a magnetic drain plug.
