Is it normal for the gearbox magnet to look like a shaving brush? This is after 1000 miles. The oil looks as clean as the day it went in. The bike was unused for many years and didn't have a magnet before, so I flushed the gearbox with hot oil to get all the sludge and emulsified oil out before I filled it (some years ago now). I was expecting something from a 1970 gearbox but this seems like a lot. When I rubbed it off, a lot of the mass sort of disappeared, but I could feel some metal.

Agree with Paul, plenty of…
Agree with Paul, plenty of obscure corners for the crud of ages to hide and now appear when you fit a magnet. Boxes do make swarf as gear surfaces slowly wear . With modern oils my engine magnets stay perfectly clear of those furry bits.

Thanks both for your input. I'll change the oil and check it again in a few hundred miles. Hopefully there will be less next time.

Probably a good idea to use an EP 90 or even EP 75/80 oil. Which being thinner should get thrown around a bit more and get to those sleeve gear bushes.

I am assuming that you haven't stripped and cleaned the g'box just flushed it out with the internals in situ.
I would guess that what you are seeing is the crud that has been hiding in the corners that has then been disturbed whilst being ridden.
If you want peace of mind whizz off the outer and inner covers for a quick peek to look for something obvious.
